The Evolution of Office Space
Posted on 23 July, 2012
What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word “office”? Probably images of: office cubicles, bland chairs, the clicking of keys and office gossips, the scent of stale coffee and people too busy typing on their computers that they don’t even think to smile. But things have changed. With the development of new technology, the whole concept of “office space” has transformed. Now, a startup or freelancer follows a natural life–cycle in their office use.
An office evolution or is it an office revolution?
What caused this evolution to disrupt the traditional thinking of the ‘grey carpet tile’ serviced office, which has become so synonymous with corporate culture?
Working from home is probably appealing for most, especially for freelancers. Being able to walk in your pajamas all day without bothering about your look, sounds great. What’s more, home offices provide you with the comfort and pleasant atmosphere that help you to motivate and get ready for work. Despite the comfort, working from home is a lonely prospect. People like to be around other people, and it’s only a matter of time before Jeremy Kyle doesn’t cut it as a source of conversation!
The lack of social interaction eventually pushes workers to a new venue, the internet coffee shop. They’re on every corner, perhaps there’re a few on your street or even next to your house. They’re convenient, with free wi-fi. Oh, and don’t forget that scent of freshly brewed coffee or the occasional cheeky mocha.
But at what point does a coffee shop worklife lose its appeal? Often, when the crowds and the noise get too much to bear.
Maybe now you’re asking yourself where’s that place that can combine both the home comfort and quiet atmosphere and at the same time boosts your social life, without boosting your expenses. The answer is “coworking”.
Coworking spaces appeared a few years ago. They’re a combination between an office, coffee shop and home comfort. In those places you’ll meet new people, develop your business and social networks. You’ll find the peace that you need to concentrate on your projects and of course, internet access. You’ll also be making your own cup of coffee, just the way you like it! Or, making one for your new friends or future partners.
So is the coworking the last step in the evolution of the office space or is it the beginning of something bigger?
According to Mike Pihlman, AltamountCowork, “This is the way the world is going to be. The walls are going to come down…Coworking is a great place if you are starting a small business or you are freelancer or independent, or if you want to meet other people like you are and get your business started.”
What do you think is the next step of this evolution?
