Coworking Is Better Than Your Bedroom

Starting a small business at home can first feel like the best thing in the world, no boss to answer to, working in your pyjamas and laying in bed with your trusty laptop. I’m not going to lie, this is an amazing feeling to start with but as you start to take your business more seriously, working from home can damage your chances of business success. When working from home it’s easy to sit back and not think about personal hygiene or mental well-being and you can often lack motivation. A professional space does nurture a professional attitude and when working from home, it’s not particularly a professional space.

Due to the recession, there have been many offices left empty, however renting a large office is obviously unsuitable to a small home business. For us, finding office space in Canterbury at a reasonable price seemed impossible and we toyed with the idea of moving the company to London, but after the additional traveling costs the figures just didn’t add up. This is where coworking comes in.

Coworking is where multiple freelancers, entrepreneurs or creative individuals come together, pay a fixed fee for office space (regular or not) and then you have your own office space and a professional mailing address. This then splits your out-going costs between multiple business as well as offering the chance of collaboration, which in turn benefits everyone.

When you share an office with other businesses it opens up many doors for those used to working at home. You meet new people, discover new perspectives and learn new things to do with running your business. As home businesses like You-nique or Forever Living grow, you need to have a competitive edge and so getting opinions can get you ahead of your game.

The cost of an office is usually off-putting for most home business owners, but with that cost you not only have a reason to get out of bed in the morning but you also have a whole new network of people who can help you grow your business. Renting a general office is physically impossible for most startups, even some businesses that have been around for a few years struggle with the overheads of an office space.

Coworking spaces are cropping up all around the UK, and it’s not hard to see why. If you ever have client meetings, it’s not professional to have these people visit your home whereas a coworking gives you a relaxed business setting. Here at Fruitworks, we offer the meeting room out for hire for £10 per hour. Sparing £10 to bring your clients to a meeting room rather than a living room can make a huge impact on the first impression from your potential client.
